The Debut 50R is the 1 x 12 in the Debut range, and a lot of its appeal is what it leaves out. There is no modelling and no menu diving here, just a digital-free design and a no-nonsense control scheme that harkens back to the early days of solid-state amplification.

  • 50 watts, one 12-inch speaker: a custom-designed Blackstar driver, enough for rehearsal and small rooms without the bulk of a 2 x 12.
  • All-analog signal path: instant plug-and-play, with nothing to boot up or configure.
  • MOSFET-enabled overdrive channel: raw, rich and saturated dirty tones from a solid-state amp.
  • Two-mode reverb: built in, alongside shimmering full-range clean tones.
  • Power scaling to 5 watts: takes the volume down to conversation levels without compromising on tone.
  • Line in and speaker-emulated line out: jam along with practice tracks, or record and practise silently.

Against the 100-watt 2 x 12 Debut, this one trades headroom and low-end weight for a size and weight you will actually carry. For most home and rehearsal use that is the right trade.

Description

Blackstar's Debut 50R is a 1 x 12-inch combo that harkens back to the early pre-modelling days of solid-state amplification. The design is digital-free and the control scheme is deliberately plain, so the amp is ready the moment it is switched on. For a lot of players that is the whole point of it.

Cleans first

The 12-inch custom-designed Blackstar speaker, the all-analog design and the built-in 2-mode reverb combine for shimmering full-range clean tones. It is a good platform for pedals for the same reason it is a good practice amp, because nothing in the path is trying to add its own character before you do.

MOSFET overdrive

A swift swap into the MOSFET-enabled overdrive channel unlocks raw, rich and saturated dirty tones to rival even the most renowned tube amplifiers. This is the same approach used across the Debut range, and through a single 12-inch speaker it stays tight and focused rather than spreading out.

Practical features

The Debut 50R carries a line-in for jamming along to practice tracks and a speaker-emulated line-out for silent recording and practice. Power scaling takes the amp down to five watts, which reduces your volume to conversation levels without compromising on tone. That last one matters more in an apartment than anything else on the front panel.

Size and finish

Choosing the 50R over the larger Debut combos is mostly a decision about weight and room size. One 12-inch speaker and 50 watts covers home practice, teaching rooms and rehearsal comfortably, and it raises the level of your practice, performance or recording without taking over the room. This one is finished in cream.
