The CA-50 is a pocket chromatic tuner aimed at band and orchestral players. Its detection range covers A0 up to C8, taking in everything from piccolo down to tuba and contrabass. Wind and string players who tune by meter will find it does the job without fuss.
A range that covers the whole section
Detection runs from 27.5 Hz at the bottom to 4186 Hz at the top. That span serves a whole ensemble. A sensitive microphone is built in, so note names read accurately in a quiet room with no extra hardware. Where the surroundings are noisy, the optional CM-200 contact mic clamps on and ignores what everyone else is playing.
Setting your reference pitch
Calibration moves in single hertz steps between 410 and 480 Hz. Groups that sit above or below standard concert pitch can be matched exactly, whatever the piece calls for. Detection accuracy is quoted at plus or minus one cent.
Tuning by ear
Sound Out mode plays a reference tone through the internal speaker, covering an octave from C4 to C5. Rather than watching the needle, you match the pitch yourself, which doubles as ear training. Use both approaches together and your intonation tightens up faster.
Battery life and size
Two AAA cells run the unit for roughly 135 hours on zinc-carbon batteries. A warning appears on the display once they start to fade. The body measures 100 x 67 x 17 mm and weighs 81 g with cells fitted. It slips into a case pocket. Quarter-inch input and output jacks are on board for cabled instruments.
