Description

The handytraxx 1bit is a portable belt drive turntable that plays vinyl and captures it digitally at the same time. With built in speakers, battery running and a tube gain control, it works on a kitchen table as readily as on a desk. Six AA cells last eleven hours.

Three speeds, belt driven

Turned by a DC servo motor through a belt, records at 33-1/3, 45 and 78 rpm all spin here, while a processor watches rotation and compensates for drift. The platter is die cast aluminium. Wow and flutter comes in under 0.15 per cent at 3 kHz, with signal to noise quoted above 60 dB.

Cartridge and tonearm

Tracking is handled by a moving magnet stereo cartridge, the JICO J44 A7, supplied already fitted to its headshell. Arm length measures 190 mm effective. Downforce can be set anywhere between 1.5 g and 3.0 g using the counterweight in the box.

Recording to a computer

Over USB the deck sends audio as DSD at 2.8224 MHz or 5.6448 MHz in 1 bit, which is where the name comes from. That suits anyone archiving a collection at high resolution. If you would rather work in PCM, sample rates run from 44.1 kHz up to 192 kHz at 16 or 24 bit.

Listening and tone shaping

A pair of onboard drivers put out 2.5 W each, and there is a headphone socket rated at 70 mW into 32 ohms. Line and phono connections let you run into a hi-fi instead. Bass lifts or cuts by 8 dB at 130 Hz, and treble does the same at 5.5 kHz. RIAA equalisation and 38 dB of phono gain handle the rest.

Packing up

Weight is 2.8 kg and the body measures 370 x 286 x 118 mm with the lid on. Power comes from the mains supply, which ships with five interchangeable plugs, or from six alkaline or NiMH batteries. A dust cover, record mat and EP adapter are included.
