The handytraxx play is a portable belt-drive record player with DJ tools built into the chassis. Korg adds a crossfader, a looper, filters and a delay, then makes the whole thing run on six AA batteries. Vinyl players who perform away from a booth are the people it was drawn up for.
The deck itself
A DC servo motor drives the platter through a belt, and digital rotation correction holds the speed steady. All three speeds are there, 33-1/3, 45 and 78 rpm. Korg fits a stereo ceramic cartridge and supports MM types if you would rather use your own.
Effects without a laptop
Crossfader and mix stages run at 44.1 kHz in 32-bit float, as do the filters. Three filter voicings are selectable alongside an off position, and the delay offers feedback up to 80 per cent with times from 10 ms out to a full second. The looper captures around 20 seconds at 16-bit. Everything happens on the unit.
Ins and outs
Line output peaks at 2.3 Vp, while a separate phono output gives 300 mV with RIAA equalisation and 34.5 dB of preamp gain. That means it can feed a mixer channel directly or run into a phono stage in the usual way. An AUX input takes up to 2.5 Vp for a second source. Conversion in both directions is 44.1 kHz at 16-bit.
Power and portability
Six AA cells give roughly eleven hours with the speaker on and the main volume at midday. Consumption is 2.35 W. The supplied adapter carries five interchangeable plug types, which is useful once you cross a border. At 2.3 kg and 370 x 280 x 84 mm it is genuinely luggable, a little larger with the cover fitted.
What comes with it
Korg packs a dust cover, a slip mat, a slip sheet and an EP adapter alongside the AC adapter and its plugs. A quick start guide is included. Add a record and you are away.
