The KDM-3 keeps the upright shape of a traditional metronome but runs on digital timing, and this version is finished in black. It works from 30 to 252 bpm, offers 19 beat patterns and pushes sound through a dynamic speaker that holds up next to an instrument. Daily practice is the point.
Nineteen patterns, from waltz to clave
Beats per bar run from 0 to 9, and each can be split into duplets, triplets or quadruplets, including versions that leave the inner notes out. Son clave and rumba clave are built in as well, in both 2-3 and 3-2 forms. Latin, jazz and pop material is covered without workarounds.
Three ways to set the tempo
Pendulum step follows the fixed increments of a wind-up unit. Full step moves one beat per minute at a time. Tap tempo reads the speed straight from your finger, which is quicker when working to a recording. Timing holds to within 0.2 per cent.
Timer mode for structured sessions
Give it a length of time and the metronome counts down, then stops on its own. Warm-ups and technical drills run without you watching a clock. Small feature, real difference.
Reference pitch and power
A tuning tone spans one octave from C4 to B4, with A4 calibration adjustable between 410 and 480 Hz in single-hertz steps and accuracy held under a cent. Four AAA batteries give around 120 hours at moderate volume. There is a 3.5 mm stereo mini jack for headphones when the house needs quiet.
