Korg's KDM-3 keeps the upright shape of a traditional desk metronome and puts digital timing inside it. This is the black finish. Tempo runs from 30 to 252 beats per minute.
Nineteen beat patterns
Anything from 0 to 9 beats per bar is available, along with duplets, triplets and quadruplets, plus a version of each that drops the inner notes. Latin players are served too, since son clave and rumba patterns are built in, each in 2-3 and 3-2 forms. Nineteen in total covers classical, pop and jazz practice without fuss.
Three ways to set tempo
Pendulum step follows the increments of a wind up unit, full step moves one beat at a time, and tap tempo lets you knock in the speed of a piece by ear. Whichever you choose, timing holds within 0.2 per cent. Pick to suit the moment.
Timer mode
Set a length of time and the click runs for exactly that, then stops on its own. For warm ups and technical drills it saves watching the clock.
A tuning reference too
Reference tones cover one octave, from C4 at 261.63 Hz up to B4 at 493.88 Hz. That is enough for wind and string players to check pitch before they start. Calibration shifts the A4 setting anywhere between 410 Hz and 480 Hz in single hertz steps, and tone accuracy stays under one cent.
Sound and running time
A 36 mm dynamic driver carries the click, and a 3.5 mm stereo mini jack is there when you would rather keep it to yourself. Battery life is generous. Four AAA cells last around 120 hours at 120 bpm on four beats at full volume, and the body measures 60 x 73 x 113 mm at 167 g.
