The microKEY2 is a 37-note USB controller built around Korg's Natural Touch mini-keyboard. Three octaves sit under the hands in a case narrow enough to park in front of a laptop. Songwriters, producers and anyone short of desk space are the obvious buyers.
Three octaves of mini keys
Thirty-seven notes give both hands somewhere to go. Octave shift buttons move the range four octaves up or four down, so the full span of a soft synth stays reachable. Chords in the left hand and a melody in the right work without constant shifting.
Two wheels for expression
Pitch bend and modulation each get their own wheel. Bends land where you expect, and modulation can be dialled in gradually instead of nudged. Guitar-style pitch work and slow filter sweeps both benefit.
Sockets and power
A single USB Type B port carries both MIDI and power. No adapter is needed. There is also an assignable switch jack, which you can map to whichever function suits the session. Current draw stays under 100mA, so a bus-powered hub copes fine.
Travel weight and setup
At 565 x 139 x 54 mm and 1.0 kg, the microKEY2 slips into most laptop bags without argument. Korg supplies a USB cable and a code for its software bundle. Setup asks little. Windows 7 SP1, Mac OS 10.8 Mountain Lion and iOS 8 are the oldest systems Korg lists as supported.
