Description

Korg introduces the microKORG 2 as a new origin, and the spec sheet carries that further than the name does. Thirty-seven mini keys, an analogue modelling engine and a vocal processor share one 2.2 kg body. A condenser microphone is included.

Keys, voices and timbres

The keyboard is 37 mini keys with velocity, and aftertouch is not part of the design. Single mode gives you eight voices, and Dual mode halves that figure while letting two timbres run at once. Layer a pad under a lead and the count gets tight quickly, so it pays to plan ahead.

The vocal side

Two microphone inputs are fitted, one on a 3.5 mm TRS jack carrying +5 V for the supplied condenser and one 6.3 mm jack for a dynamic mic. Vocoding runs four voices. On Hard Tune you get a single part, while the harmoniser handles two. Enough for the classic robot voice, and a fair bit more.

Programs, arpeggiator and effects

In memory you will find 256 programs, split across four banks and eight categories. The arpeggiator offers ten types plus a step function for building patterns by hand. Modulation, delay, reverb and an equaliser make up the effects, a lean set rather than a deep one.

Screen and connections

For visual feedback there is a 2.8-inch IPS panel. Outputs sit on unbalanced 6.3 mm jacks for left and right, with a stereo headphone socket alongside. A 3.5 mm aux input lets you play along with a phone or a laptop, and a further jack takes a damper pedal or a switch. MIDI in and out use DIN sockets, while the computer connection is USB Type C.

Power, weight and the box contents

Run it from the supplied 9 V adapter, or drop in six AA cells. Korg quotes roughly four hours or more from alkalines, which stretches across a rehearsal or a busking set. Without batteries or the microphone the instrument weighs 2.2 kg, and the body measures 542 by 238 by 65 mm. A soft case is included.
