The RK-100S 2 is Korg's keytar, 37 slim keys across and finished in translucent black. Inside is an MMT synthesis engine with two oscillators, a noise generator, wave shaping and multi-mode filtering, so this is a synth in its own right rather than a controller on a strap. Front-of-stage playing is the point.
Eight hours on batteries
Six AA cells power the instrument for roughly eight hours, so no mains lead pins you to one spot. Plug headphones in or run a cable to an amp and you are ready to go. An optional 9 V adapter is available if you would rather draw from the wall.
Vocoder work on stage
The mono mini input takes a dynamic microphone, which puts the 16-band vocoder within reach during a set. Shift and hold controls for the formants are on hand, and every band has its own level and pan. That same socket accepts line level, so a phone can feed the effect or simply play along.
Programs and control
Two hundred programs are loaded from the factory, with up to eight voices at once and four when the vocoder is running. Oscillator one offers saw, pulse, triangle, sine, formant, noise and PCM or DWGS waveforms, and audio in is available as a source. The second sticks to the four basic waveshapes. Arpeggiator modes cover up, down, two alternating patterns, random and six trigger types, plus a step function on top.
What you carry
Length is 839 mm and the instrument weighs 3.5 kg with batteries fitted. A strap and soft case are supplied along with the manual and a sticker. MIDI out and a USB type B port connect it to the rest of your gear. Readout is three digits of LED.
