The SQ-64 is a hardware step sequencer for driving synths and drum machines with no computer in the room. Three melodic parts each handle up to eight notes at once, and sixteen further rhythmic lanes run one note apiece. Patterns stretch to 64 steps.
Melody and rhythm side by side
Polyphony on the melodic side means chords and pads can be sequenced, not just single lines, which is unusual on a box this size. The sixteen monophonic lanes are there for drums and percussion. Between them a full arrangement fits on one unit.
Setting the pace
Tempo covers 30.0 to 300.0 BPM and is set in tenths, so a piece can be nudged into place instead of jumping a whole beat per minute. Slow experimental work and fast dance material are both catered for.
Wiring it up
MIDI comes in on a 3.5 mm stereo mini jack, which needs a type-A converter cable, and two outputs use the same connector format. Running a pair of destinations from one sequencer therefore needs no splitter. Korg's MS-CABLE-YL patch cables are sold separately.
Power and portability
USB bus power will run the unit, or you can fit the optional KA350 9 V adaptor when no computer is connected. Dimensions are 341 x 119 x 39 mm at 1.0 kg. It travels easily. An owner's manual and a USB cable are in the box.
