Description

For players chasing vintage tone without hauling a van of old instruments, Korg built the SV-2S. This is the 73-key model with speakers fitted inside, so it makes sound before a single cable goes anywhere. Weighted RH3 keys sit beneath a panel of real knobs and switches.

What the S adds

Korg SV-2S 73-key Stage Vintage Piano, what the s adds

A pair of speakers sits inside this version, and that is the one difference between it and the plain SV-2. Practise at home, sketch an arrangement or cover a small function without carrying an amplifier. No PA required indoors. Bigger rooms are handled by the rear panel outputs, so the same instrument moves from a bedroom to a stage.

Grands, uprights and a pair of harpsichords

The acoustic bank draws on grands from four countries: Germany, Italy, Austria and Japan, each in a brighter and a more classical variant. Uprights appear too, alongside a honky-tonk, a genuine tack piano and two harpsichords, one French and one Italian. None of it needs a technician. Play any voice alone, stack a second on top, or split the keyboard between a pair.

The electric and electronic bank

Korg SV-2S 73-key Stage Vintage Piano, the electric and electronic bank

Nearly every American tine and reed model is covered, joined by a Japanese electric grand and a scarce German original. Clavs arrive in a spread of settings, while the electronic column runs to analogue, digital, VPM, FM and sampled voices, the Korg M1 piano among them. From tone wheels through Vox combo, Italian transistor and American tube designs, the organ list reaches church and pipe registrations, and strings come as a 1970s analogue machine, prog-era tape or a warm orchestral section. Mallets, brass, choir, guitar, bass and synth pads handle the rest.

Six stages and one valve

Signal processing runs through six stages. The amp block carries a Valve Reactor circuit built around a 12AX7A vacuum tube, which adds warmth at low drive and genuine bite when it is pushed hard. Ahead of it sits a three-band equaliser, then pre-effects covering a red compressor, treble boost, u-vibe, vibrato, tremolo and a Vox wah. After the amp models come modulation, reverb, tape echo and stereo delay, closed off by two limiters.

Feel and sound selection

Korg SV-2S 73-key Stage Vintage Piano, feel and sound selection

The action is RH3, with real weighted hammers behind every one of the 73 notes from E1 to E7. Eight curves let the touch response suit your hands, and selection stays physical: a type knob, a variation knob and a row of favourite buttons. No menu diving. Beside the 72 factory sounds sit 64 user slots in eight banks, while polyphony runs to 128 notes.

Outputs, pedals and control

Quarter-inch left and right jacks are joined by balanced XLR sockets, so a console or snake takes the signal without a direct box in between, and a headphone output covers monitoring. DIN MIDI in and out link to other gear, while USB handles the computer. The DS-2H damper pedal is supplied, and half strokes register properly. Two further inputs take a footswitch for sostenuto or rotary fast-slow, plus a sweep type for wah and organ volume, or one more that adds the una corda function.
