Zoom LiveTrak L12next 12-Track Digital Mixer and Multitrack Recorder
The L12next is a digital mixer that behaves like an analogue one. Every channel gets a 60mm fader and three multi-function encoders, so gain, EQ, compression, pan and sends are set by turning a knob rather than scrolling through menus.

The trouble with most compact digital mixers is that the useful controls are two menus deep. The L12next takes the opposite route. It puts three encoder knobs and a 60mm fader on every channel, and a switch changes what those knobs do, so the control set grows without the surface growing with it.
Mixing by hand
In their default state the three encoders are high, mid and low EQ. Change modes and the same knobs become gain, pan and sends. That covers nearly everything you reach for during a soundcheck without touching a screen, which is the difference between solving a feedback problem in two seconds and solving it in twenty. The preamps behind them were reworked for this model, offering +70 dB of gain, a -128 dBu EIN noise figure, and Hi-Z, PAD and +48V phantom power so guitars, line sources and condenser mics all connect directly.
A recorder as well as a mixer
The L12next records 12 individual tracks at up to 24-bit and 96 kHz alongside a stereo mix, 14 channels in all, straight to SD card. The OLED screen carries the transport and setup pages, and Overdub Mode with Auto Punch In/Out turns a rehearsal capture into a working demo without moving to a computer. The File Select button loads extra tracks in, so a mix can keep growing between sessions.
The master bus
Individual tracks are recorded at 24-bit, but the master channel is captured in 32-bit float, so the mix you hand over cannot clip no matter what happens on stage. A master compressor sits on the same bus, adding warm, natural control across the whole mix rather than channel by channel.
Five personal mixes
Five independent monitor outputs give each musician their own balance. Each output can carry a stereo mix for headphones and in-ear monitors, or a mono mix for a floor wedge, which is what makes the same desk workable for a band rehearsal, a small stage and a tracking session in the same week.
